Job Description

Principal Project Manager

Mott MacDonald is looking for professionals to join our ever-expanding Project, Program, and Construction/Commercial Management (PPCM) practice. We are looking for a Principal Program Manager and Construction Manager who will be accountable for managing large construction management focused programs in the Northeast region. Specific functions include:

  • Leading a multi-disciplined team and providing direction and oversight to accomplish project goals
  • Manages and oversees field construction activities in conformance with quality requirements and safety standards, project drawings, specifications, schedules, cost estimates, and procedures
  • Manage and oversee the work of the entire program management team, consisting of Project Delivery Management, Project Controls, Administrative, Operations, Project Finance, and Support staff
  • Executing large programs in accordance with the governance codes and requirements/standards of our clients
  • Develop the scope, and support the implementation of, a capital projects program, to include advising the client on program delivery strategies
  • Direct the Project Management / Project Controls (PM/PC) team to resolve issues and make recommendations to decision makers on issues resolution
  • Manage, coordinate, and administer all project activity related to construction, schedule, budget, quality assurance, initial operation, and closeout of capital projects
  • Schedules major construction inspections to ensure contractual compliance with plans, specifications, materials, schedules, workmanship and safety standards
  • Participates in negotiating claims and proposed change orders and associated costs, resolving field and contractual differences, and processing scheduled progress payments
  • Coordinating all program interfaces with client and third-party stakeholders, including presentations to client senior management teams, the public, and other external third parties
  • Monitoring and reporting on the status of all program activities, including cost, schedule, earned value, document/data management, risk management/mitigation, quality management, change management, safety and other items as applicable
  • Identify and track program level issues; evaluate and recommend resolution alternatives; and manage project delivery to meet scope, quality, cost, and schedule goals
  • Resolving any issues as they might arise through effective communications with clients, internal teams and other third parties
  • Represent the capital projects group at Advisory, Committee and Commission meetings. Coordinate with staff to develop agenda and prepare/review staff reports. Present at these meetings, as required
  • Oversees management of resourcing and equipment needs on program such as daily and weekly short-range planning, manpower, productivity, resourcing, safety training, construction operations training, equipment maintenance, and equipment and tool supply and control planning
  • Knowledgeable of safety policies and procedures and performs assigned duties in a safe manner and, while supervising others, has responsibility for their safety and ensure that they comply with established safety policies and procedures and practice safe work habits
  • Managing contractual commitments of contractors, including cost, quality, and schedule and coordinates their field activities with Mott MacDonald’s ISO-9001 accredited processes

 Required Qualifications and Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree in engineering, construction management, public administration, or business administration.
  • 20+ years of experience exhibiting advancement through increasing levels of seniority and a growth of professional responsibilities in large-scale capital project and program management.
  • Minimum of 10 years of experience working in client roles, engineering consultancies and/or contractors in the Architecture Engineering and Construction industry.
  • 10+ years of experience leading major projects or programs, with a particular focus on program management and construction management
  • Experience in various delivery models, including EPCM, design-build, design-bid-build, time-and-materials and early contractor involvement
  • Membership in AACE International, PMI, or another professional organization indicating a commitment to the project and program management field.
  • Effective communicator with demonstrable experience presenting and communicating to third parties including clients, regulators, industry and the general public on major capital programs
  • Additional preferred qualifications and experience:
    • At least 5 years of the required experience will be at the working staff level in the project controls field (cost engineering; estimating; or scheduling); or in a position involving the management of sources of funding (private, local, state, federal)
    • Certification as a Program Management Professional (PgMP) with PMI; a Certified Construction Manager (CCM) with CMCI, a Construction Management Certification (PMI-CP) with PMI; Certified Cost Professional (CCP) with AACE International; or as a Project Management Professional (PMP) with PMI, or other equivalent certification relevant to the management / delivery of capital projects.
    • Has a current and valid OSHA Safety Certificate in good standing


Salary Range: $153,000 - $178,000
