Facilities & Infrastructure Team
Burns’ Facilities & Infrastructure team offers a full range of engineering design services for institutional, industrial, and special purpose facilities and associated infrastructure construction. Our strong experience in facilities maintenance and management allows us to offer our clients customized, cost-effective solutions to help build resilient and sustainable infrastructure.
Burns is currently seeking a Structural Engineer - Forensics to join our Philadelphia, PA or California team.
The Structural Engineer - Forensics makes independent decisions on structural engineering challenges, overall project objectives, and critical issues. He or she continues to develop technical expertise in structural engineering and begins to specialize in niche technical areas. He or she must dispense knowledge to staff through mentoring or internal presentations. The Structural Engineer will spend the majority of their time using their technical expertise to produce projects on schedule, in budget, and with high technical quality and client satisfaction.
Specific responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following:
Assess facilities projects for infrastructure clients.
Conducts forensic analysis for the assessment, restoration and renovation of existing structures.
Performs site inspections and condition assessments of existing structures and projects under construction.
Coordinates design work between various internal disciplines and external consultants.
Takes lead in developing project approaches and concepts on assigned projects and requests assistance from the other senior technical staff when needed.
Sets structural technical direction on projects, determines discipline work tasks and flow, and delegates design elements to engineers and designers as appropriate.
Ensures that company technical policies and procedures are practiced during the execution of projects for clients.
Reviews shop drawings and submittals, records changes, and communicates directly with client representatives and contractors and as required.
Performs on-site inspections during construction and coordinates design requirements with contractors and suppliers.
Maintains overall project schedule of deliverable milestones and structural engineering project budget.
Develops innovative technical solutions and engineering methods to enhance efficiency, quality, and production.
Performs specific engineering studies and design analyses and assists the Project Managers in establishing budgets, cost estimates, and project schedules.
Assists in proposal writing and client presentations for future work.
Is recognized by clients as a technical resource.
Actively participates in professional organizations and/or client groups where the technical reputation and image of the firm may be enhanced.
Mentors junior staff.
Specific forensic experience related to fire and flood-damaged structures.
Current 40 hour OSHA HAZWOPER Certification
Professionally Licensed Engineer with a Bachelor's degree in Structural Engineering, Architectural Engineering, or Civil Engineering required. Master’s degree a plus.
Must have or be able to get NCEES records to be licensed in multiple states.
At least 5 years of related and progressive experience in structural restoration for infrastructure clients.
Candidate must have excellent communication skills, the ability to work in a team environment with other Burns disciplines as well as clients and subconsultants, and the ability to lead the structural portion of projects.
Willing to travel nationally to assess client sites.
Microsoft Office, AutoCAD, and structural engineering analysis software (e.g. STAAD.Pro, RAM Structural System, TEDDS, Enercalc, etc.) experience is required. Revit experience a plus.
Must be authorized to work in the United States and have a valid driver’s license.
